Bunnings is a household hardware chain in Australia.. As of FY2022, the company revenue had reached $17.5 billion.

Around 2010, the American hardware giant, Lowe’s, made a strategic decision to enter the Australian market, committing $400 million to open 50+ stores between 2011-2014. Bunning’s saw this threat as a watershed moment; do we fight, or do we risk slowly becoming irrelevant?

They realized that over time they had lost the entrepreneurial spirit that had been the foundation of their success. Lowe’s competitive threat was an opportunity to have every leader deeply reconnect to the magic that had founded Bunnings. From this place, they knew they could give Lowe’s a fight the company would never forget.

In this journey we connected each leader to the core of who they are, what their unique gift – their purpose – is, as well as how they were going to transform their part of the business, mapped out in their Purpose to Impact™ Plans. These purpose-driven entrepreneurial plans became the foundation for all strategic planning and coordination across Bunnings.

During roughly this same period, Bunnings’ revenue doubled from $6 billion in 2010 to $12 billion in 2018.

Additionally, Bunnings has consistently had the highest customer satisfaction ratings of any retailer in Australia (91% in 2019), as well as a superior employee retention rate across 43,000 team members of over 80%.
