When ING Bank in Amsterdam made the pioneering move to transition from a traditional hierarchical structure to a fully agile organization, the HR team encountered a significant challenge. In order to deliver on ING’s purpose and strategy, the bank needed to invest in its employees; employee craftsmanship and engagement needed to be elevated for everyone who worked at ING, not just the leaders.

Thus, critical focus areas for employee wellbeing were identified, including:

  • Invest in employees’ personal growth to benefit the individual, the customer, and the organization
  • Create appropriate growth challenges for employees to build stronger, better-rounded professionals
  • Build a trusting environment to encourage experimentation and innovation by making it safe to fail

Solution

While we had initially collaborated with ING to design an award-winning program* for their top 5000 leaders, we subsequently designed a version for all employees, delivered internally by key P2i ING program alumni. Through this shared program experience across the organization, employees gained a greater sense of connection and belonging, to both one another, as well as the organization and its purpose. On an individual level, they were empowered by purpose and clarity to transform their unique strengths into tangible and personally fulfilling business contributions.
