When ING Bank in Amsterdam became one of the first global banks to transition from a traditional hierarchical organization, into a fully agile one, the HR team faced a considerable cultural challenge.

In the matter of a year, most of the top 5000 leaders with the coveted ‘Vice President’ title, lost both title & role in a newly flattened structure – now they bore agile titles such as ‘Product Owner,’ ‘Chapter Lead,’ and ‘Scrum Master.’ This dramatic change created an identity crisis for many – who were they in this rapidly transforming organization and culture, with unfamiliar roles, titles, and power structure? And how could they best find their place and contribute to the success of the new organization?
